Pushing on rudder pedals moves whatever is not fixed: the pedals, the rug under them or the chair. Find out which one is moving, then fix that.
The two problems feel alike from the seat but need different fixes.
| What you see | What to check | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The pedals move forward when you push | The floor under them. Bare hard floor, a loose rug and carpet all behave differently. | Something fixed behind or under the pedals. See the pedal section below. |
| The chair rolls backward | The casters, and whether your chair has a lock. | Lockable casters, or a chair that does not roll. |
| The rug slides with the pedals on it | The rug and the floor under it. | A rug gripper pad. |
| The pedal plate shifts on its own base | Your pedals’ feet or fixing points. | Your pedal maker’s manual and support page. |
Pushing forward on the pedals pushes the chair back. Casters that lock stop that. Many office chairs take swap-in casters, but check yours first.
The Hirate set is five 3 in casters. The listing describes a double locking system, with a brake that stops both the wheel and the swivel. It lists a standard 7/16 in (11 mm) by 7/8 in (22 mm) stem and a rating of up to 600 lb for the set of five. It says the casters do not fit IKEA chairs or odd-sized bases.
If the stems do not match, a seat that does not roll, such as a bench or a stool, avoids the problem. For a living-room setup, the Xbox couch guide covers what else to check.

Start with how your pedals are built. Thrustmaster’s TFRP uses sliding rails with a self-centering rudder axis and toe brakes, and the VelocityOne Rudder has adjustable pedal width. Our rudder pedal comparison sets those two against Logitech’s pedals, and the rudder pedals setup guide covers the connections.
On a bare hard floor, one option is a rug under the pedals, held in place by a rug gripper pad. Gorilla Grip’s listing describes a nonadhesive, dual-sided pad that holds a rug to a hard floor. It comes in a 2 ft by 3 ft size that you trim with scissors, and the listing says to put it on a clean floor. The listing names hardwood, tile and vinyl floors, so on carpet this is not the fix.
The pad never touches the pedals, so check how your pedals’ feet behave on the rug. Another option is a stop for the pedals’ back edge, such as a wall, a heavy shelf or the legs of a desk. Do not drill or screw into a floor you do not own.
A nonadhesive pad that holds a rug to a hard floor. It keeps the rug in place, not the pedals.
Checked October 28, 2026. The caster and rug pad details come from their Amazon listings. I found no maker page for either, so this guide says nothing about how they perform with a given chair, floor or pedal set. Pedal designs: Thrustmaster’s TFRP page and Turtle Beach’s VelocityOne Rudder page.
